Disease Paranoia

disease paranoia
What causes paranoia in older people, and what is the best way to deal with it?

My nan is 86 years old and has Parkinson’s Disease. She was recently in hospital where paranoia was developing, in that she believed that “everyone was out to get her” and that the nurses “were not treating her good”. She has now moved into a rehabiliation home to get her back on her feet again in readiness to return home. Since being there the paranoia has got worse. She thinks we are all “lying to her”, she thinks “everyone is out to get her”, and she says “she knows things that shes not allowed to tell us because she will get into trouble”.

What is causing this, and what is the best way to deal with it?

Many thanks for your answers xx

Paranoia in older people is a form of dementia. This could be down to a slight impingement of blood flow to the brain or it might be down to the medications she is on, or simply a change of routine.

My grandmother was the same and the only way she could be passified was to give her constant reassurance and change the subject – over and over again being careful not to get paranoid yourself! She does not mean it personally. She cannot help it. Try and get some routine going whereby you get a break and another sibling or friend takes over for a while, keep her occupied, even if it is only tidying out a sewing box or peeling potatoes. Poor dear is probably very frightened.

Walking-down-the-street-with-double-eyelid-paranoia…. is that a disease?
