Paranoia Screening Test
Very slightly elevated bilirubin level? Cause for concern?
Okay, I’m probably being a little over cautious here, but here goes. I’m a 30 y/o male with no health problems. I do, however, have a lot of paranoia about illness, thus I ordered a full blood screen at my last physical. I got the results and everything was normal except my Bilirubin level showed to be “Out of Range”.
The range my lab set was 0.3 – 1.0. My Bilirubin level was 1.1. I know that’s only 0.1 over, but I saw “Out of Range” and got concerned.
I was also tested for Hepatitis A, B, and C with all negative results except the Hep B surface antibody. (I have been vaccinated against Hep B and was told that was why the antibodies are present in my system). Additionally, my ALT and AST levels were tested and both were WELL within the normal range; 11 and 12 respectively. Basically I’m wondering if a 1.1 mg/dL Bilirubin level is anything to worry about? Thanks.
No, not really. It’s only 0.1 out of the reference range, and this could be due to to a number of things that aren’t important. Keep in mind that bilirubin is a product of excretion, so levels will fluctuate depending on things like the breakdown of RBCs.
If you’ve tested negative for Hep, and if you don’t have a drinking problem or some other form of liver disease, then you’re perfectly healthy.
